Winged Current - 2025

24" x 12" x 48"

Reed, raffia, light kit, preserved cicada wings, recycled plastic

Victoria Pater is a multidisciplinary artist playfully transforming ordinary materials into vibrant, sculptural works that embrace imperfection and celebrate personal growth. Her practice is rooted in curiosity and experimentation. Through creative repurposing, she explores ideas of evolution, identity and the interconnectedness of past, present, and future generations. Unafraid of breaking conventions, Pater pushes boundaries to discover what’s possible, bringing imagination and wonder to light.

Handwoven from reed and raffia, this luminous sculpture merges plant materials with recycled plastic. The colorful play-doh tops hold preserved cicada wings collected by the artist’s children during the rare dual emergence of periodical cicada broods in the summer of 2024.

Guided by embodied making, Victoria Pater allows form to emerge through process and experimentation. The vibrant yellow cord functions as both structural support and electrical conduit, binding material to the flow of energy and intention. Pater chooses to reframe domestic waste as material inheritance, illuminating the possibilities of transformation.
