Philip Alvy
Philip Alvy (he/him) is an award-winning filmmaker, educator, and visual artist whose work explores memory and the past. He grounds his art in a lens of learning, constantly seeking out new mediums to push and expand his ever-adapting body of work.
Philip earned his BA in Cinema Arts from Columbia College Chicago and an MFA in Film and Media Arts from Emerson College. Outside of school, his films have screened at festivals worldwide.
He has turned his artistic passion into a career as an educator raising the next generation of artists. Currently, Philip chairs the art department at Wolcott, a Chicago high school for students with learning differences; directs the summer film program for the National High School Institute at Northwestern University; and is the founder of Arts Integrated, a nonprofit that creates tools for K-12 teachers to inspire arts-based learning across all disciplines.
In this this project, high school students explore the theme of home using disposable cameras. Each student captured three photos within 24 hours, showcasing their unique interpretation of what home means to them. Inspired by the exquisite corpse, this project produced an unexpected, interconnected visual story about the significance of home.
